Dance came to Maria as a young child, as an adolescent it was her healing dance.
Maria had some formal training in various disciplines along the way but it was not until she was 29 and found Bellydance that her vocational dance training began. The study and experience of Bellydance took her to explore Traditional Egyptian Dance and all the other cultures that influence Bellydance. The essence of all these dances is the connection to the belly-navel area and this led her to explore other somatic disciplines.
Maria’s main influence was Alexander Technique. In 1995, she co-founded a research group that met weekly for 6 years. They explored the connections between Egyptian Dance, Alexander Technique, Body Mind Centering, Ideokenisis, Feldenkrais, Authentic Movement, Shamanic Dance, Contemporary Dance and Laban. This work led Maria to create Embodied Bellydance®.
In 1998 she was called by a group of woman to facilitate a “Goddess workshop”. This opened the door to “Dance Journeys for the Awakening Heart” working with Trance and Ecstatic dance, Shamanic dance, Dancing the Chakras, Dancing the Elements and Directions and Goddess Archetypes, and to eventually becoming a Dance Movement Therapist.
Since 1989, she has taught classes and workshop in her home town of Melbourne, and all major cites in Australia and regional Victoria. For 10 years she was a part of “Yalla”, a Middle Eastern Music and Dance group that played at all major festival throughout Australia. She has facilitated DMT workshops for special needs populations since 1995. At present she lives in Italy where she facilitates weekly Dance Movement Therapy sessions for children and adults with special needs “Dance Journeys for the Awakening Heart”.
She returns to Australia twice a year to teach and facilitate and she will be again returning to Japan to teach Embodied Bellydance®.

About Embodied Bellydance®“
To be embodied in this dance is to be whole. It weaves a story throughout the spine and radiates out via the navel in all directions to all parts of the body. It mimics the Spiralling nature of the Universal and of all living things . . . it asks to you stop, wait, listen to the sound of your inner flow and to be whole” Maria Sangiorgi
“Dance, when you’re broken open. Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off. Dance in the middle of the fighting. Dance in your blood. Dance when you’re perfectly free.”
